Shrove Tuesday (Pancake day!)
Aside from the fact that it is wonderful to pay homage to such a delicious food - there is a reason for it.
Quick Facts:
It is always the day before Ash Wednesday.
Making and eating Pancakes and other sweet delights are considered a last feast using the ingredients sugar, fats and eggs - as they are typically restricted during the Lent period.
In many cultures they make alternative tasty treats like the sugary doughnuts called Malasadas made in Portugal.
Also in Portugal they call the celebration Terça-feira Gorda which translates to Fat Tuesday in English (a rather blunt yet accurate phrase).
The word shrove is the past tense of shrive, which means to be releived of sins through confession.
Despite the fact that I will not be partaking in the fasting ritual of Lent - I will make pancakes on Shrove Tuesday and post up photos. A Polish friend of mine enjoys nutella and marshmallows on hers...might give it a go. What are your fav toppings???
