Roller round and kick some ass

Posted by gem, 15th August 2010

Last night I had a dream that my job was to deliver scones and coffee to people around the city on Rollerskates. It was a great job, but I had competition, another girl on rollerskates who delivered cupcakes and coffee. We didn't like each other very much and ended up having a street fight, there was cheese and icing everywhere. Scones won in the end (thats me, remember. It was my dream after all). It made me think of the rollerderby, and how awesome it is.

You have to enjoy watching people barge and shove each other in a sporting environment (not obviously to the extremes, but when it is in a controlled enviornment like hockey, or when football players punch each other). It's that cringing 'guilty pleasure', it's not right to like it but you just can't help yourself!

Add some chicks with attitude, rollerskates and some punky getups and you have the Roller Derby.

So, basically there is a circuit track and two teams. Each team sends 5 players on to the track.

Jammer: Scorer

Blockers (3 of them): Defense

Pivot: Who is a blocker that can become a jammer later in the game.

You can tell who each player is by how many starts they have on their helmets, but usually it's pretty obvious once you see the push and shoves coming out.

The Jammers start at the back and have to get through the pack to score points. To impede the progress of the opposing team's jammer, players may block using body parts above the mid-thigh, excluding forearms, hands, and head. Elbows may not be used in blocking, and cannot be swung at other players or used to hook an opponent's or teammate's arm.

Here is a good little video....

Richter City Roller Derby have their second bout on the 4 September at the TSB Arena on Queens Wharf in Wellington. I am taking my dream as a sign that I need to get a team together to go down and be entertained.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing
