Welcome back...solid perfumes in pretty vessels

Posted by gem, 8th November 2009

This discovery originated from my recent obsession to find a simple gold locket necklace.

I have been browsing around secondhand stores for months, but the closest I got to the gold locket was one that had  'Love Peter' engraved on the front. Decided that I didn't want to sport something that obviously was bought with adoration for another....that would be a bit strange.... On one of these secondhand locket finding missions I came across miniture perfume bottles and cute little adorned containers, and upon further investigation realised that they were originally solid perfume containers.

Solid perfume, for those of you who don't remember your mothers using it, is perfume created with some sort of wax. Usually a mixture of beeswax and almond oil. It is melted and then the scent it added so it is a similar texture to say a chapstick, then put in these adorned containers, or jewelry so that it is easily carried around and applied.

These are some vintage solid perfume pendants I found online.

This is a compact from 1993 from Estee Lauder

The bottom of the birdcage opens for the solid perfume, and the bird actually swings!

This one is a Maxfacta pendant from the 70's

A lot of the ones I found online still contain the perfume, but I figure that it should be easy enough to fill them again with my own homemade solid perfume....hmmm...worth a try anyway.
